Find out more about the lovely city of Saarbrücken in the Saar-Lor-Lux-region in South-West Germany...
Every now and then you'll find a brandnew picture on this first Saarbrücken City Photo Blog!
Today, some friends and I were in the "culture and tea pub" Perspektive 1 to celebrate Sabine's birthday there. This pub has a wonderful flair, comfy interior and great selection of (mostly Indonesian) drinks and food. You can also read a book that you can borrow from their wide selection or play some games there that the staff provides. It's a definite must-go when you're in town!!!
No, this is not the gate to a mine, but to a complex belonging to the local mining company. As I told you before, the Saarland still depends on mining, so we have a huge complex downtown (this one is in Triererstrasse) where the administration of the mining companies works.
Some students must have thought it's funny to strangle the "sitting girl" with barrier tape from the construction site nearby. Well, maybe she even strangled herself, it must be hard to sit in the cold (in front of a frozen pond) in her light summer dress... =) (If she seems familiar, yes, I introduced her to you in summer already.)
Almost the same view as this picture, this one was taken yesterday evening. The snow is gone again, unfortunately everything melted away this morning. I hope it comes back, the cold winter looks so much nicer with this white glace...
Yeah! It snowed for the first time this year (and this winter, actually). It started about 3 hours ago, and it's even perfect powder snow!!! There's not much there yet, about 5 cm or so... but of course I took my chance to build my first snowman in 2007, which was approximately 8 cm tall. =)
Knut (St. Knut Day) was made famous by IKEA. In Sweden and Norway, Christmas ends on January 13th, after that, the Christmas decoration is taken off the trees, and they are being thrown out of the flat. This is a picture of Saarbrücken Knut, people around my area collect their Christmas trees on a big stack, hoping that the waste disposal will take care of them. PS: Here you can find recent Knut offers from IKEA Germany. =)
I've once shown you a Saar-Lion before, they usually have a really cute animal face. The AMADEUS café made a different one (which looks pretty run-down after 7 years): A human lion that is supposed to look like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Hmm, I don't like it... =(
Today, it was FREEZING!!! (-4 degrees C, proved herewith by this frozen puddle.) We thought we won't have a proper winter anymore, and now they even announced snow for Friday. If I will be defrosted by then, I hope I can show you some nice pics.
I found this tree with the big cut striking, also because of its moss-green colour. Speaking of trees: the news said today that there were 40 million trees in Germany knocked off during the storm Kyrill.
Yesterday's storm was luckily not as bad in Saarbrücken as in other regions of Germany. I think the only victims here were trees and road signs, as you can see on this picture. =)
Today, the whole of Germany was suffering from a severe winter storm, so it was impossible for me to take a picture outside. I decided to show you another detail of yesterday's church (Johanneskirche): one of its gorgeous windows.
This is a detail of the statues along the police station in Karcherstrasse. It's a huge and very impressive building, with it's straight forms it looks very strict. About the colour of the building: German police officers used to wear this type of green for their uniforms. They are changing to blue uniforms now, let's see if the building will change its colour as well at some point. =)
This building is from 1908, as the inscription above the right upper window proves. I liked the little tower-shaped top on the other side, especially because it was full of pigeons. They must have made it their home. (It's very hard to see on the picture, sorry.)
Do you know the feeling when you stumble out of an elevator with shaking legs and you want to thank the world for not letting you die in there? This is exactly what I always feel like when I use this elevator from 1969 in one of our university buildings... Well, green is the colour of hope, so I hope I'll survive the rest of my time at university without being stuck in this. =)
The shop "Weyand am Markt" is one of the best decorated shops I've ever been to. They offer room decoration, body and health products and antiques. If you ever come to Saarbrücken, make sure to check out their store in Fröschengasse, the decoration changes, but you always feel like home when you come there.
Hmm, Saarbrücken might be rainy sometimes, but there is no sight of snow or even real winter yet... that's very unusual and really strange. The news people keep talking about global warming...
Dear all, thank you so much for your patience during my winter holidays. I've been in Spain with my family, and stupidly forgot to take my card reader with me, so that I couldn't present any Saarbrücken pictures for about two weeks. Anyway, I'm back and I'll post a new picture every day again.
