Theme Day: Something that is about to disappear soon

Something that is going to disappear soon in my town is the city motorway.
It's not going to be removed, but they will build a tunnel around it, so it disappears from the downtown view completely.
I'm very happy about it, because the motorway is one of the worst constructions I've ever seen. At least once a year (in winter or spring usually) it's flooded, because as you can see on this picture, it was build right next to the river Saar. Also, the noise is pretty bad when you want a quiet walk along the river banks... =(
So hopefully in 2009 we will have a better looking town. If you want more information about this project, check Stadtmitte am Fluss (town center at the river).

That has the potential to make the city look much more beautiful, depending on what they put on top of the tunnel!

Yeah I understand what you mean, it's really crazy to build a motorway so close to buildings.

They're doing the same with the "Peripherique" in Paris that they cover on some parts and they'll make gardens on top, much nicer...

A major road was taken through our town, it was being taken underground. We had so many environmental protesters at the time, but now the area is much better. You will enjoy the change.

Good post and admirable goal. However, beware of the "big dig" example in Boston. Sometimes a tunnel can get out of control.

CONGRATS! You'll get nice waterside parks now just like Portland, Oregon, etc. etc.!

That's amazing that they would build a motorway right where it would get flooded, seems rather incompetent! I hope the tunnel doesn't flood, that could cause some harm.

I never heard of that term "motorway" before - I guess that means the same as roadway? A road for cars? Anyway, it looks like theres a nice pedestrian walkway right next to Saar river - looks like a nice place to stroll - I wonder though, why all the cars lined up in one lane with all the other lanes open hmmm

Hey there,
a motorway is like a highway.
The lined up cars are parking there, the parking situation here is also a catastrophy... =(

Moonsoleil you forgot to tell, taht when the Autobahn is flooded the cars are sdirectetd through the Street on the right, so the traffic is not so bad. It takes maybe 10-15 Minutes more than normal...
